Flower show
Students, Staff and school management of Dawood Public School celebrated the arrival of spring in the city by organizing a colourful flower show
on Monday, March 01, 2010.
Wife of Honourable Chief Minister of Sindh Qaim Ali Shah, Mrs. Mehtab Shah inaugurated the Flower Show in school premises creative flower arrangements were displayed by 1600 students from KG till 11th grade. Other guests who attended the event were the Principals and teachers of some of the leading schools in Karachi such as Foundation Public School, Mama Parsi, St. Michael’s Convent, Hill Crest, Cordoba, Happy Home and Progressive Public School. Mr. Mehmood Shaam, group editor of the Daily Jang also attended the function.
Mrs. Shah also handed over a cheque of Rs. 138,000 to The Citizens Foundation on behalf of Dawood Public School.
Around 3500 seasonal flowering plants of 20 different varieties were at display. Students also showcased the vegetables and herbs that they had grown in pots such as 3 kinds of tomatoes, parsley, spinach, salad leaves, basil, cabbages, etc
Recycling was the main theme behind the show. Plants were exhibited in planters made out of seashells, plastic water or soda bottles, old cooking pots, tins, etc and old building material were used like old school furniture, wooden planks, and broken tiles to create various segments such as a flower house, a miniature pond, dry flower arrangements, etc. The School’s ten street children also contributed to the display by bringing a cart, painting it and decorating it with colourful flowering plants. Students of grade ten came up with an amazing flower train made out of fruit crates. Other students, made arranged flowers in tubes and tyres.
Some exotic plants exhibited were bonsais, orchids, and Venus Fly Trap. Amongst others Pansies mix, Antirrhinum, Dianthus, Geraniums, Begonia, Nicotinia, Ornamental Cabbage, Mithokeria, Verbena, Marigold mix, French Marigold, Petunia Mix, Calendula, Impatiens, Alyssum mix, Phlox mix, Dalias, Snowball marigolds etc were on display at the flower show.
Students performed small tableaux, decorating their heads with flowers and colourful clothes. A beautiful naat was also recited. The flower show was on display for two days. The parents showed their appreciation and pleasure of the flower display and the school for giving their children an opportunity to learn gardening while at school.
The show was a big success only because of the combined efforts of the administrative staff, faculty, students and cooperation of the parents of the students.
